Weight Loss
I've gained weight. There - I said it. It started creeping on a few months ago - along with that insatiable appetite that many of us women get around "that time of the month" just before our periods. Our senses are heightened, especially our tastebuds (at least that's how it works with me). Everything tastes so good. I usually allow myself to indulge on those two or three days every month, because I know it's short-term. And ... I want to really enjoy every bite instead of feeling guilty and ruining the experience. And so, every month on those days, I eat (and eat!) , I enjoy every morsel, every bite... and then I work out a little bit more and eat a little bit less for the next few days til I'm back to "normal".

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control, with the prevalence among children aged 6 to 11 increasing from 6.5 percent to 19.6 percent. Among adolescents, the prevalence of obesity has increased from 5 to 18.1 percent. Globally, there are over 20 million children under age 5, who are overweight or obese.
FIBER’S EASY TO FIND WHEN YOU STICK WITH PLANT FOODS
Most Americans eat less than half the amount of fiber that we should. That’s unfortunate, since fiber helps protect us from certain cancers and reduces our risk of heart disease, diabetes and constipation. Additionally, fiber gives a feeling of satiety, which means it makes you feel full. The best way to get more fiber is to serve yourself more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and other complex carbohydrates.
Each week, I receive so many emails, unfortunately, I don't have time to answer them all. I will be posting questions from my mailbag, in hopes that my answers can help more people! Here is a question I received yesterday.
Hello Cheryl -

After seven seasons as the Nutritionist for The Biggest Loser, I've learned the causes of obesity firsthand. Many of the contestants have found themselves on the Ranch, in part, due to their love of fast food. Many, have spent years indulging themselves at their favorite drive-thrus, with cheeseburgers, fries, chocolate shakes, fried chicken and gallons of soft drinks.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind for indulging without guilt:
Who says Thanksgiving dinner isn’t healthy? The staple ingredients of this holiday’s comfort food have redeeming healthful properties that make this meal extra scrumptious. Adding a little culinary know-how to traditional recipes can transform this food fest into a guilt-free feast.
Who knew that drinking tea burns calories? That's right. Two to three cups of green tea per day can kick up your metabolism by 80 calories per day. It may not sound like alot, but when you're trying to lose weight, every calorie counts. Besides that, green tea contains other healthy compounds that provide all sorts of healthy benefits, including slowing the aging process.
There’s no doubt that aging affects every part of our body, from head to toe. For many of us, what really sends us into a tither is the dreaded appearance of a wrinkle or a renegade gray hair. I certainly don’t welcome either one, but another visible aging biomarker we are very empowered to change is our muscle. Many of us, particularly women, don’t prioritize gaining and/or maintaining muscle as many men do. But if more of us understood how crucial our muscles are to maintaining a healthy sexy body, we’d be more excited about implementing some small changes that can affect a huge difference in the rate at which our bodies age.

Many people think snacks are the first thing to cut out, when trying to lose weight. They're actually a very important part of a successful weight loss plan. Snacks between meals help to minimize hunger at mealtime so you won't overeat. In conjunction with a healthy eating plan, snacks can actually help boost metabolism and burn off more calories. The timing and consuming of those snacks is an important part of a successful weight loss plan
