Why Drinking and Dieting Don't Mix

There’s no doubt that aging affects every part of our body, from head to toe. For many of us, what really sends us into a tither is the dreaded appearance of a wrinkle or a renegade gray hair. I certainly don’t welcome either one, but another visible aging biomarker we are very empowered to change is our muscle. Many of us, particularly women, don’t prioritize gaining and/or maintaining muscle as many men do. But if more of us understood how crucial our muscles are to maintaining a healthy sexy body, we’d be more excited about implementing some small changes that can affect a huge difference in the rate at which our bodies age.

Applepeanutbuttermain_fullIt's easy to find snacks in the market that display a 100 calorie (or lower) count.   These product labels can help you eat less food and stick to the calories on your weight loss plan. Some of these snacks are healthy, but not all of them are.

There's no doubt that a small portion of junk food is better than a large portion of junk food.   But the success of the Biggest Loser Plan as well as the Positively Ageless plan is that the QUALITY of the calories is just as important as the QUANTITY.

Many people think snacks are the first thing to cut out, when trying to lose weight. They're actually a very important part of a successful weight loss plan.  Snacks between meals help to minimize hunger at mealtime so you won't overeat.  In conjunction with a healthy eating plan, snacks can actually  help boost metabolism and burn off more calories. The timing and consuming of those snacks is an important part of a successful weight loss plan

I received so many emails about the delicious soup recipethat Rocco shared with Amy a couple weeks ago. I decided to post another BL-friendly soup recipe today. I developed this one for the The New Mayo Clinic Cookbook: Eating Well for Better Health  (Oxmoor House). It's light, satisfying and high in protein.   I generally use milk whenever I can because of its superior nutritional profile.  In this case, soy milk was used because of its nutty flavor and special complement to the edamame. Enjoy!

I’m often asked, "what can I do to help me lose weight and/or improve my health?" I’d definitely make my recommendations based on a list of common denominators that helped overweight contestants win a place on NBC’sThe Biggest Loser.  As the Nutritionist for six seasons of The Biggest Loser.  I've identified the key factors that have helped America earn its top ranking among obese nations of the world. I found that most of our contestants:

Biggest Loser Season Six is Here

I promised to start blogging the morning after each episode of Biggest Loser: Families but I've actually been in LA most of this week working on NEXT season of The Biggest Loser (more about that later...)

Sorry for the delay but I hope you enjoyed the Premiere as much as I did. We have an incredible group of contestants (again!) and I am sure you will really enjoy the upcoming weeks of the show. My plan is to blog about some food scoops that happen behind the scenes. I receive so many emails that I want to answer some of your most pressing food and nutrition questions in my blog.

One of the things I most enjoyed about this week's episode was the segment with Dr. Huizenga, the show's medical doctor.

Yesterday I returned from a book tour in Texas (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth) to teach Positively Ageless classes at  local Central Market stores and share The Biggest Loser weight loss secrets. I was scheduled to teach a class in Austin last night too but unfortunately, the class was cancelled due to Hurricane Ike.

My first class was at the Houston Central Market , with the assistance of Chef Steven and his entourage of talented chefs and helpers. (All of the Central Market chefs were talented and made my job so easy -- thanks again everyone!!)

We prepared a full day's menu to demonstrate how easy (and delicious!) it is to eat the Positively Ageless way, which focuses on getting the most nutrient bang for every calorie buck. These are the same ingredients the contestants eat on the Ranch.

Img_0275_2When I'm teaching a class and we talk about the importance of vitamins and antioxidants, I use the following example.  I slice an apple a couple days before class and divide the slices between two plates.  I dip one batch in lemon juice.

5 Tips for Staying Healthy on the Road

There's nothing more frustrating than leaving on a business trip just after you've finally figured out an eating and exercise plan that works with your schedule at home.

Here are a few tips to help you navigate your next journey while sticking to your guns about your food and exercise choices.

Question: Are spinach wraps ok, or are they still made of white flour?  Spinach_tortilla

Answer: This question came to me from a Biggest Loser contestant who wasn’t sure about a tortilla in her favorite wrap sandwich from a local restaurant.  It "tasted too good to be good for her” -- sound familiar?  The answer to her question depends on the brand. The first ingredient on a nutrition facts label will indicate whether this is made primarily of "white stuff" or a whole grain flour.
